Cosmetic BOTOX®, Dysport®, and XEOMIN®

BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® are injectable treatments used to temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and wrinkles around the eyes. These injectables are known as neuromodulators, which means they work by relaxing the muscles where it is injected to eliminate wrinkles. A non-surgical injectable treatment with one of these neuromodulators can remove wrinkles in the upper face, rejuvenate the appearance, and reveal smoother, younger looking skin.

About Cosmetic Injectables

BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® all contain botulinum toxin type A derived from Clostridium botulinum bacterium. However, these products are not interchangeable because they are made in a slightly different manufacturing process and are dosed and injected differently. Dr. Schlechter and his staff can help you determine which will be the best injectable for your needs.

When injected into the muscles, each of these treatments reduces the muscle activity that causes wrinkles. These injectables can be administered to effectively reduce frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved these products for the safe treatment of these upper face wrinkles on patients who are 18 years of age or older.

BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX logo BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is by far the most popular of these neurotoxins and has been around for the longest period of time. It is weighted with protective proteins so that the immune system cannot easily attack the molecules and prevent them from accomplishing their purpose. BOTOX® Cosmetic can be administered in small doses to produce noticeable results.

  • Corrects frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet
  • Most frequently used neuromodulator for the correction of upper face wrinkles
  • Small doses can produce noticeable results

Dysport®

Dysport logo Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA) can also fight frown lines, crows feet, and forehead wrinkles. Dysport® tends to diffuse more than BOTOX® Cosmetic, which in some cases may make it more appropriate for the treatment of crow’s feet or other widespread upper face wrinkles. Due to this, a higher dose of Dysport® is typically needed in comparison to BOTOX® Cosmetic. Dysport®’s greater likelihood of diffusion may also make it more likely to cause eyelid drooping if administered by an inexperienced practitioner. However, our experienced practitioners know how to account for this by injecting Dysport® in a slightly different spot than BOTOX® Cosmetic. Dr. Schlechter has over twenty years of experience in plastic surgery and performs all the injections himself. His office and spa staff are well versed in the use of neuromodulators and are a good source for answering questions.

  • Corrects frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet
  • Diffuses more than BOTOX® Cosmetic
  • May require a higher dosage than BOTOX® Cosmetic

XEOMIN®

XEOMIN logo XEOMIN® (incobotulinumtoxinA) is the newest neuromodulator available today. It differs from both BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® in that it is “naked;” it has no additives, only botulinum toxin type A. Because of this, XEOMIN® does not need to be refrigerated, and the human body may be less likely to develop an allergic reaction or antibodies to it since the toxin is not bound to a neuromodulator.  Since it is not weighted down by protective proteins, XEOMIN® may migrate more quickly than BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport®. XEOMIN® may have a slightly slower onset than the other treatments in terms of the results. It can typically be administered in a similar dosage to BOTOX® Cosmetic.

  • Corrects frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet
  • “Naked injectable” with no additives
  • Potentially less likely to elicit an allergic reaction or antibody response
  • Has been useful in treating patients who respond poorly to BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport®

Your Treatment

The treatment experience with each of these injectables is similar. Patients come into the office and are first evaluated, and a treatment plan is formulated. Then they are given a short, approximately 10-minute treatment with just a few tiny injections of their chosen neuromodulator. This “lunchtime procedure” has minimal or no downtime, which allows patients to return to their normal activities shortly after treatment.

The onset of the results can vary slightly between neuromodulators. Within only a few days after the injection, there will be a noticeable improvement in the appearance and a reduction in wrinkles. Patients will still be able to make natural facial expressions but will not have the unsightly wrinkles that usually accompany them. The results will look natural and can last up to four months. Regular maintenance treatments can be administered to preserve a youthful and wrinkle-free appearance.
