FAQ

WHAT CAUSES GYNECOMASTIA?

In most cases, we don’t know the direct cause of gynecomastia. Obesity, weight gain, hormonal changes, the use of steroids, genetic/family history, and certain medications are all factors that are attributed to increased breast sizes in men.

HOW COMMON IS GYNECOMASTIA?

Gynecomastia is a common condition that affects about 10 percent of all men of all ages. It is the most prevalent in men between the ages of 50 and 69.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE GYNECOMASTIA?

During your consultation, Dr. Schlechter will accurately determine whether you have gynecomastia.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M A CANDIDATE FOR MALE BREAST SURGERY?

Gynecomastia surgery can be performed on men of all ages and body types, but the procedure is typically performed on patients who are in good overall health and have finished puberty.

How WILL I KNOW whether I NEED LIPOSUCTION OR to remove ACTUAL BREAST TISSUE?

Dr. Schlechter is often able to tell simply from examination if you require liposuction and/or small incisions.

During your complimentary consultation, you and Dr. Schlechter will discuss which surgical technique and option will work best for you.

HOW IS GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY PERFORMED?

One or a combination of techniques can be used to treat gynecomastia. If your enlarged breasts are caused by excess fat tissue, you can receive liposuction alone.

If the patient also has excess skin, we will remove the excess fat with liposuction and excise the excess skin. Smartlipo lasers can also help remove unwanted fat and tighten the skin. We use local anesthesia to numb the treatment area.

WILL THE PROCEDURE RESULT IN VISIBLE SCARRING?

If you are only receiving liposuction, your scars will be very small and inconspicuous once the incisions heal.

If you are also receiving skin excision, we will place the incisions along the natural contours of your chest so that the resulting scars are virtually undetectable.

This procedure can often be performed via tiny liposuction incisions and if needed, via a small incision at the junction of the areola and skin to help hide the incision.

How much does GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY cost?

The cost of your gynecomastia surgery will depend on your specific anatomy and procedure. Please see our Plastic Surgery Procedure Pricing Guide for more information.

WILL MY INSURANCE COVER GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY?

Since gynecomastia surgery is considered an elective procedure, insurance companies usually do not cover the cost of the procedure.

WHAT IS THE HEALING PROCESS FOR GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY?

The average recovery time for gynecomastia is 4 to 6 weeks. If your job is not very physical or strenuous, you can return to work in three days. Otherwise, you should rest for at least two weeks.
