Inner labia (labia minora) that are large, misshapen, or protruding can cause women to be self-conscious about their appearance. In addition, overly large labia minora can lead to discomfort during physical activities, including sexual activity. Labiaplasty is a procedure designed to reduce the size of the inner labia and provide women with comfort and confidence.
Many women are born with labia that are naturally large. The majority of these women are embarrassed about the size and appearance of their labia and experience physical and emotional discomfort. Reducing the labia can improve both form and functionality.
Labiaplasty can be performed using one of several techniques. During your consultation, Dr. Schlechter will evaluate you and your goals to determine the method that will best achieve your desired results.
This is the most common technique to reduce the size of the labia minora. Small incisions are used to excise a wedge of tissue from the inner labia. Once the excess tissue is removed, the incisions are closed and will be inconspicuous once they heal. This is Dr. Schlechter’s preferred procedure for labiaplasty.
This method reduces the size and length of the labia minora. Dr. Schlechter removes a strip of skin along the entire edge of the inner lips, which also eliminates the darker edge of the labia and leaves a smooth, lighter border.
If you are experiencing pain or discomfort due to overly large or irregularly shaped labia, labiaplasty may be right for you. Ideal candidates should be in good overall health and at a healthy weight. Candidates should also have realistic expectations of what can be achieved with the procedure.
Labiaplasty is performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia with or without intravenous sedation.
Immediately after surgery, you will experience some minor swelling, bruising, and discomfort. These symptoms are easily managed with prescribed pain medication. Most patients are able to return to work within three to five days after the procedure.
Patients may resume sexual activity after four to six weeks with their surgeon’s permission.
