Identifying Double Bubble Deformity
Double bubble deformity can be identified in two different ways. The first is when a ridge of breast tissue appears at the bottom of the breast, and the breast crease may be higher on the breast than it should. The breast may seem to sit on top of the implant, giving the appearance of two bubbles. The second characterization of double bubble deformity is when the implant is pulled upward due to muscle movement, and the breast tissue appears to be “falling off” the implant. This can also form a double bubble appearance. Sometimes, double bubble deformity is accompanied by capsular contracture.
For most breast augmentation patients, the risk of double bubble deformity is low. The risk is slightly higher for patients with constricted lower breast tissue, a sharply defined inframammary fold, a short distance between the breast fold and the nipples, breast sagging, large implants, or a transaxillary or transumbilical incision approach for breast augmentation. Because the transumbilical incision increases the risk of double bubble deformity and other surgical complications, Dr. Schlechter does not offer this technique to his breast augmentation patients.
The Solution Through Breast Revision
Patients with double bubble deformity must have it surgically corrected through breast revision. Dr. Schlechter will first loosen the breast pocket and remove any hardened scar tissue to eliminate capsular contracture. He will then adjust the breast pocket, relocate and replace the implant, and tighten the tissues of the breast so that they remain secure. Dr. Schlechter may also exchange the implant in the other breast if desired or if necessary to improve the results. Due to his careful technique and extensive experience, Dr. Schlechter’s rate of capsular contracture is incredibly low.
