A facelift and/or necklift is a surgical procedure meant to refresh and rejuvenate the face and neck.
Wrinkles and smile lines (nasolabial folds) start to form when gravity and aging take their toll, causing sagging skin. This cosmetic surgery lifts and tightens the facial tissues to correct skin sagging, remove displaced fat on the jawline and neck, and smooth out wrinkles to restore a youthful appearance.
Facelift surgery does not stop the aging process, but it can reverse many visible signs of aging. Many patients report looking 10-15 years younger following the procedure. The procedure directly improves the appearance of skin sagging especially in the cheek, jowl and neck areas. It also improves deep creases in the nasal folds, lifts sagging jowls, and improves facial volume. By correcting these issues with this cosmetic procedure, your skin will appear smoother and tighter as if you turned back the clock.
Men can benefit greatly from facelift surgery with Dr. Schlechter. With his thorough understanding of male anatomy, Dr. Schlechter can remove sagging skin and tighten underlying tissues to rejuvenate your appearance. He has multiple techniques to address redundant neck skin.
This is a minimally invasive procedure with minimal scarring. Dr. Schlechter carefully places all incisions so that they are as inconspicuous as possible.
What you can expect from a facelift by Dr. Schlechter:
Full facelift surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia and intravenous sedation. This provides a more pleasant anesthesia experience as compared to general anesthesia.
Dr. Schlechter will first make incisions behind your hairline that begin in the temporal area, extend around and behind the ear, and finally end at the hairline at the back of your head. He will then carefully lift the skin away from your face and tighten the underlying tissues and muscles.
He will also remove excess skin and fat to improve your facial contours. He will reposition your skin and use absorbable sutures to close the incisions. Dr. Schlechter will also treat your neck as part of the procedure to remove any banding and loose skin.
If you prefer a mini facelift or mid facelift, Dr. Schlechter will focus on the lower parts of your face instead of addressing your entire face and neck. Mini facelifts may have faster recovery times. A thread facelift is another alternative that uses medical-grade threads to tighten and lift sagging skin on the face and neck.

Facelift candidates must be in good health with no bleeding disorders or serious medical conditions. You must avoid smoking and have relatively good skin. Candidates must also have realistic expectations and recognize that while facelift surgery can reduce many signs of aging, you will continue to age after the procedure. Dr. Schlechter encourages a good skin care regimen following the procedure.
Facelift surgery can last up to three to four hours. Dr. Schlechter takes meticulous care while performing the surgery to produce the best results. Secondary facelifts can take a little longer due to having to deal with scar tissue from the previous procedure.
Facelift patients will have scars after the procedure; however, the scars are virtually imperceptible after the treated areas heal. Only on rare occasions will a patient have a noticeable scar. Dr. Schlechter follows his patients closely for a year or more to monitor the healing process for the best result possible.
Dr. Schlechter typically combines facelift surgery with a neck lift, The most common procedures added to a traditional facelift would be upper and/or lower eyelid surgery. He also performs CO2 laser resurfacing around the mouth to help with lip wrinkles. If you wish to undergo multiple facial procedures, Dr. Schlechter can determine which procedures will help you achieve your aesthetic goals. A midface lift does not address the neck.
One of the purposes of facelift surgery is to correct loose skin and fat pockets. In many cases, facelift surgery can correct a double chin by improving skin tightness in the jowl area and removing the fatty deposits that create a double chin while also tightening the skin.
Facelift surgery tightens the skin but does not improve skin texture. Facelift patients who would also like to improve their skin texture can combine the facelift with laser skin rejuvenation (also known as laser skin resurfacing). Laser skin resurfacing can be done typically after three to four months after the facelift procedure. The area around the mouth and lower eyelids can also be lasered during the facelift procedure. Again, Dr. Schlechter likes to see his patients start a good skin care regimen. It helps to improve the duration of the facelift result. The Dr. Will tailor a skin care program to the needs of each individual patient.
For the first night after surgery, your face will be bandaged. The bandage is removed the next day. The bulky bandage is replaced with an elastic facial garment that he requests be worn 24/7 for the first week following surgery. Over the following few weeks, you may experience swelling, discomfort, bruising, numbness, and dry facial skin. Medications can resolve discomfort, and cold compresses can reduce swelling and bruising. Depending on one's job, patients may return to work in 7 – 10 days. By 6 weeks patients typically resume full activity. Once the tissues have healed, you can use a moisturizer to soothe dry skin. The full result until all subtle swelling is gone may take as long as 12 months.
Older techniques and inexperienced surgeons have caused patients to have a windswept appearance after a facelift. Dr. Schlechter, however, is highly experienced and uses current techniques to lift and reposition the underlying tissues along with the skin. Your results from Dr. Schlechter’s surgical facelifts will not cause you to look windblown or “operated on,” but natural and youthful.
The cost of your facelift will depend on your specific anatomy and surgery. Please see our Plastic Surgery Procedure Pricing Guide for more information. The range for the traditional facelift/necklift combined ranges from 12,000-15,000 dollars. The midface lift or necklift can be done separately for 8500- 10,000 dollars.
